The seismic monitoring observation system at Syowa Station (SYO; 69.0°S, 39.6°E) was fully replaced during the wintering season in 1997. An old seismographic vault constructed in 1970 was closed in December 1997 because of a superannuating for inner side of the vault by continuous flowing in of water from walls in summer and its frozen in winter. All the seismometers were moved to a new seismographic hut (69°00'24.0"S, 39°35'06.0"E and 20 m above mean sea level) in April 1997.

Seismic signals of the short- period (HES) and broadband (STS-1) seismometers in the new hut are transmitted to the Earth Science Laboratory (ESL) via analog cable of 600 m in length. The new acquisition system was installed in ESL and characterized by 6-channel 24-bit A/D converter for both the sensor signals. All digitized data are automatically transmitted from the A/D converter to a workstation via TCP/IP protocol. The new system have some advantages for both the reduction of efforts for daily maintenance and the data transport/communication processes by use of LAN at the station and by the satellite telecommunication system.

From the spring of 2004, INTERSAT telecommunication link have been working between SYO and NIPR. Then the aquicited digital waveform data have been sent to NIPR continuously every day by using the UUCP protocol. Moreover, it becomes easily to make a remote control dirrectly to the A/D converter and acquisiting Solaris server at SYO from NIPR office.
