Welcome to "Polar Seismology"

"Seismology" in polar regions (Arctic and Antarctic) has a significance to study the static condition and dynamics of the Earth, as viewed from high latitude in a global point of view. This book covers the recent development of seismology in polar regions by several aspects; observations and networks, international collaboration, heterogeneous structure and dynamics of the lithosphere, deep Earth's interiors viewed from high latitude, characteristics of seismicity and seismic waves propagation, global tectonics in terms of Earth's history, as well as the inter-disciplinary studies regarding interaction between multi-spheres.

The most exciting initiative for recent polar studies was the International Polar Year (IPY) in 2007-2008. The IPY had witnessed a growing community of seismologists who have made considerable efforts to acquire high-quality data in the regions. It also provided an excellent opportunity to make significant advances in seismic instrumentation of the polar regions to achieve scientific targets involving global issues. For example, lithospheric dynamics in an ice-covered environment; the role of Antarctica as a keystone in super-continent formation; the effect of improved seismic coverage on global models of the Earth’s interior structure, etc.

Taking these aspects into account, recent seismological achievements by the IPY are focused, especially on seismic signals near the surface associated with the cryosphere evolution. Topics on "cryoseismology", such as glacial earthquake activities, are demonstrated in terms of global warming currently undergoing. Moreover, innovative inter-disciplinary studies are demonstrated, together with observational experiments and long-term monitoring under the extreme conditions in the polar environment.
